7 Dimensions of ABA

The 7 dimensions of ABA - I'm sure you have heard this term but might be wondering what it is, and how it compares to the 3 principles of ABA and the 3 levels of scientific understanding.

Why do we need to know about the 7 dimensions of ABA: When we implement behavior modification programs, we need to make sure we are following the 7 dimensions to warrant that we are ethically using scientific findings to determine that what we are doing is in fact appropriate for our field and the individual.

The 7 Dimensions are:

Genterality (Generalization): the behavior can be transferred to other people, settings, and times

Effective: The behavior that is being changed improves the individuals/organization in a socially significant way, and not for the benefit of someone else.

Technological: Procedures are accurately, cleary and in detail described so that anyone can follow them

Applied: Improves the everyday life of the individual then then helps those around them

Conceptually Systematic: The procedures used are derived from the 3 ABA principles

Behavioral: Observable, and applies to the behavior looking for change

How does that compare to the 3 levels of scientific understanding or the 3 principles of ABA?

  • The 3 levels of scientific understanding provides us with the ability to identify if our science is working through control, testing out hypothesis (prediction), and observing and describing what we see. It does play a role in the 7 dimensions, such as Behavioral/ Description.

  • The 3 principles of ABA also applies to the 7 dimensions of ABA in the same way, when using behavior modification, we need to identify that the procedure is conceptually systematic
